Howard Hughes' Former Home Finds New Life in Henderson

From TV Lot to Time Capsule: A 1970s Icon Heads to Heritage Street

It might look like just another house with desert dust on its shingles, but the former home of Howard freakin' Hughes is about to become the newest (and arguably coolest) exhibit at the Clark County Museum in Henderson. Yep, the same house that currently chills behind the 8 News Now studio is getting a second act — and a much-deserved spotlight.

$1.5 million from Clark County Commissioners is already on the table to get the house moving — literally. It'll soon be relocated to Heritage Street at the museum off Boulder Highway, right next to a charming lineup of historic Southern Nevada buildings.

To power the project forward, the Clark County Museum Guild launched "Heritage in Motion," their own 50th anniversary campaign, with the goal of raising the rest of the $4.3 million needed to make the move happen. The house will be more than just a restored relic; its garage is being transformed into classrooms for students, blending Vegas history with future learning.

This isn’t just any mid-century dwelling. As volunteer Michelle Munkres explains, it’ll serve as the anchor of a new 1970s exhibit, showcasing not just the era's architecture, but Hughes' unique impact on Las Vegas — from casinos to aviation.

Why locals are buzzing:

  • Built-in history: Lived in by Howard Hughes himself

  • Educational upgrade: Garage turned classroom space

  • Era-accurate design: A true slice of 1970s Vegas

  • Part of a larger story: Expanding Heritage Street's timeline

The house move — last done in 2007 for another exhibit — is no small feat. But with help from veteran structural engineer Melvyn Green, the logistics are locked in. What remains? Raising the final $1.6 million to restore and exhibit this time-traveling bungalow.
